Saint Paul Tour

This a record of my Tour de Saint Paul. I am currently attempting to bicycle all 870+ miles of bikeable streets in the city of Saint Paul, between October 1st and December 31st.

A few facts about this project:

  1. According to my sources, the city of Saint Paul has 865 miles of residential and arterial streets (also 331 bridges)
  2. I'm recording my trips with Strava.

Saint Paul Tour "On Hold"

By Tim Erickson

I put the Saint Paul Tour on hold several weeks ago, when I made an unexpected move to Minneapolis. My opportunities to ride in Saint Paul are fewer and I'm a reluctant to start a Tour of Mpls until my schedule stabilizes a bit.

I continue to ride on a regular (almost daily) basis, but not as much as I was in late September and early October.

If I stay in Minneapolis for a while, I may undertake the challenge of biking every street in Minneapolis or even go for the whole Twin Cities.

Contrary to rumors, I have no intention of changing my handle to MplsTim!

136 Miles In

It's been 9 days since I quietly launched my Tour of Saint Paul, seeking to ride all 865 miles of Saint Paul streets before the end of the year. I've managed to cycle 137 miles in those 9 days, which I'm pretty happy with. Last fall, when I resumed biking after many years, my goal was 50 miles per week. This fall, I've upped my goal to at least 70 miles per week, but am really trying to get closer to 100.

Committed?

My commitment to this experiment is growing. I've ridden about 40 miles in Saint Paul, in just the last three days. This barely puts a dent into the overall map of Saint Paul, but is a significant start. Already, I'm seeing corners of Saint Paul that I didn't know existed and revisiting streets or corners that I haven't seen in ages. Of course, I'm making this commitment during a short stretch of ideal weather for urban biking. A change in the weather may impact my motivation.

My Tour de Saint Paul

Over the last year, I've been contemplating an effort to bike every street in Saint Paul. I had imagined it to be a summer time project, but personal circumstances this summer prevented me from launching the attempt. On a whim, I'm going to start the effort now, in mid autumn. I'd like to think that this is something I could accomplish by the end of year, but that might be wildly optimistic. Phase one of the project, is to see how many miles of Saint Paul Streets I can bike in the month of October.
